Bottom-up adoption of Labstep has lead to deployments on an institute-wide level. We work closely with institutions to accommodate to unique infrastructures and ensure IT and data integrity requirements are met.
“I love that I can access my protocols from everywhere, make changes and have it all immediately accessible in the lab. And I don’t have to keep printing out every protocol every time I change something.”
In March 2019, Labstep was chosen as the official ELN for the Francis Crick Institute in London. The institute brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under a single roof in Europe. Following a 2-year ELN review by the Crick IT team, Labstep has been selected as the recommended platform for all institute staff.
As an independent organisation, the Francis Crick Institute founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL, Imperial College London and King's College London. The institute is dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease.
The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 moved into a brand new state-of-the-art building in central London, which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under a single roof in Europe.
Ahead of the deployment, several consultations were organised to specify details of Labstep use for each department. In close collaboration with the IT team, Labstep created a personalised web domain where Francis Crick Institute users can log in user single sign-on (SSO). To ensure a complete audit trail of all research activity in the Crick, integrations were built with the Crick's high-performance computing and data analytics platform (CAMP), ensuring all data generated is automatically saved to local servers. Other custom features include an integration with ServiceNow, used as a service request software. For Crick researchers, all user accounts were created in advance and a custom project architecture was set up. Researchers received presentations and trainings on Labstep functionality and the customer success team is often on-site to deliver support.
“Labstep enables me to easily upload all my protocols by just copy and pasting. It has eliminated the need for paper records and motivates me to do better recording keeping.”
In December 2018, Labstep was rolled out across the 320 resident researchers at MRC Unit the Gambia at LSHTM, the single largest investment in medical research in a low and middle income country. Optimised to synchronise across mobile and desktop devices, our cloud-based tools allow for streamlined data collection between bench, field and desk for the resident researchers and support efficient communication with collaborators based in the UK.
The MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM is one of two research units established in sub- Saharan Africa by the Medical Research Council UK and is the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM’s single largest investment in medical research in a low and middle income country. MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM represents a unique concentration of scientific expertise and high quality research platforms in the West African region.
The Unit’s investigator-led research is underpinned by easy access to the field with well-defined populations, rigorous ethical procedures and ability to deliver GCP-compliant clinical trials. The large research portfolio spans basic research to the evaluation of interventions for the control of diseases of public health importance in sub-Saharan Africa.
In December 2018, the Labstep team travelled to the Gambia to deliver on-site support during the deployment. This included training sessions for all resident lab groups and connection of instruments and devices by a Labstep integration engineer.
All local researchers had Labstep accounts set up and received tablets to run Labstep on either at the bench or in the field. Overseas collaborators received digital support from the Labstep customer success team in the form of platform training and project setup.
Launched in 2017, the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the single biggest investment the UK has ever made in dementia thanks to £290 million from founding funders the Medical Research Council (MRC), Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
The UK DRI is an Institute made up of one hub and six centres across the UK, all working towards a shared vision of changing the outlook for people with dementia. UK DRI is home to over 700 researchers from a range of disciplines.
